One-to-One Mentoring - The One-to-One Mentoring Program is an Alexandria Central School (ACS) program sponsored by HFY. One-to-One links a child with a member of the community for the development of a consistent one-to-one relationship, which focuses on such things as academic support, goal-setting, and relationship skills. Such relationships can help to create a positive view of his/her relationship to the world and the positive impact he/she can make on it. Children who have a mentor almost always exhibit a marked improvement in areas of self-esteem and academic progress. A child is recommended for One-to-One by the Pupil Service Team (PST) of Alexandria Central School (ACS), which notifies parents/guardians and provides program information. Parents elect to have their children participate in the program by completing a consent form. The PST then matches each child with a suitable mentor based on personality and interests. Mentor and student schedule to meet one hour per week for the duration of the school year. This could take place during the school day, or before or after school, depending on individual circumstances. During their time together, mentor and student may do a variety of things depending on the child's needs. Working on school assignments or even playing games provides opportunities for meaningful relationships to develop. Often, both the mentor and the student will choose to continue meeting over subsequent school years. A Mentor is a member of the community, at least 18 years of age, who wants to make a difference in a child's life within the structure of the One-to-One Program. All mentors are screened and oriented to the mentoring process. For more information contact:
Job Shadowing - The Job Shadowing Program allows area students an opportunity to learn about a job, career, or trade by interning for a day with an employer in that field. At the beginning of each school year, Rebecca McDermott, Executive Director is given an opportunity to meet with all students in grades 7-12. He gives an initial overview of the program. Mr. Kevin Durr meets individually with the students to ascertain their employment goals, and contacts Rich to locate appropriate employers. Parents of students participating in the program are given the information about the program (the area of interest of their child, and the participating employer). Upon receipt of parental permission, students are excused from their scheduled classes for the day. In all cases the students will ride the BOCES bus. The students must bring their own lunch. Upon finishing of the Job Shadowing experience, students are asked to complete a short evaluation form that is submitted to Rebecca McDermott. A copy of this evaluation form is forwarded to Mr. Durr and is included in the student's permanent school records. This evaluation form is used to measure the success of the program. The student's reactions are used to determine whether that particular employer was successful in promoting the overall goals of the program. For more information contact:

Softball - The Village of Alexandria Bay has participated for a number of years in the TI Powder Puff Softball League. The purpose of this league is to supplement the summer recreation programs of the participating town and villages, and to promote an organized recreational softball program, governed by the highest possible standards of sportsmanship among players, coaches, and spectators. Each team pays a league fee, which covers the cost of medals and trophies that are presented to all players as well as championship teams. The program operates from the second week in June to the third week in July, depending on the number of teams. Many teams will start practicing in May to get prepared for the games. Teams typically seek additional sponsorship to cover the cost of hats and uniforms. Currently the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary has offered to help sponsor the teams. Equipment is purchased through the municipal budget. Alexandria Central School (ACS) allows the Village teams to utilize the school fields; however, it does not provide for field care such as mowing and lining. All coaches are volunteers, as are the umpires and support staff. Many adult volunteers enter the league as coaches with little or no background in coaching, but maintain a desire to keep the program active and give the students an opportunity to play. HFY uses the Champney field and would like to thank the owner. Baseball - The Village of Alexandria Bay has participated for a number of years in the Thousand Island Baseball league. The purpose of this league is to supplement the summer recreation programs of the participating towns and villages, and to promote an organized recreational baseball program, governed by the highest possible standards of sportsmanship among players, coaches and spectators.
